It was the first out LGBTQ solidarity group to Nicaragua. Our group of ten women and three men constructed a community center in the barrio on the Carretera Norte of Selim Shible.

I conducted a dozen interviews with Sandinista leaders, priests, artists and healthcare workers.  A nascent Nicaraguan LGBTQ movement was emerging with a unique identity and goals.

In 1986, I was a part of the first AIDS delegation to Nicaragua, where medical professionals taught AIDS protocols to the Ministry of Health.  One deep sadness was that most of the men associated with the VMB (fellow brigadistas, and Marvin, the first gay man we met in Nicaragua) would die of AIDS.
