In 1984, I was a part of the
Victoria Mercado Brigade
the first out lesbian/gay solidarity group to go to Nicaragua. I conducted dozens of interviews about LGBT issues with officials, priests, artists and community members. Our group of 13 (ten women and three men) worked on the construction of a community center in the barrio of Selim Shible. The hardest reality was that most, if not all, of the men associated with the project died of AIDS in the years following the trip. A few years later in 1986 I went with the first AIDS delegation to Nicaragua and the medical personnel among us advised on AIDS protocols, treatment and prevention.
